At one point, it was extremely easy to obtain residence in Turkey but it has become increasingly difficult in recent years. There are about 5 different types of residence permits in Turkey that digital nomads might be able to take advantage of if they can tailor it to their personal situation, they are:

For instance, holders of the Turquoise Card can enjoy privileges and rights similar to those of Turkish citizens such as the right to residence, travel, work, investment, and the like. It also offers priority in obtaining Turkish citizenship.

To obtain the Turquoise Card, one must meet specific criteria, which include contributing to Turkey’s development in various fields: economic, scientific and technical, cultural, sports, etc. Applicants must have a high level of professional experience and relevant qualifications.

The registration procedure for the Turquoise Card involves a comprehensive evaluation of the applicant’s skills and qualifications. The submission of various documents, including academic qualifications, work experience, and proof of professional contribution, is critical to the application.

While the Turquoise Card doesn’t directly cater to the digital nomad community, it is a unique offering for those who can meet the qualifications and wish to make Turkey their long-term base.

Bear in mind that although the Turquoise Card offers numerous advantages, it might not be the perfect replacement for a dedicated digital nomad visa, primarily if your activities do not align with the specific qualifications required for the Turquoise Card.

The visa-free stay or e-visa grants you a 90-day stay in Turkey, which is perfect for digital nomads who are just starting to explore the country. However, if you are planning a longer stay, a simple tourist visa or e-visa won’t suffice. This is where the Turkish Residence Permit comes in. Having a residence permit will also make your life so much more convenient. Many things in Turkey require a Kimlik number, which will you will receive with a successful residence application. That number can be used to purchase internet plans and mobile data, and also allow you to have larger hardware items delivered to your house. Before this point, you will often have to rely on friends, because a lot of things in Turkey require a Kimlik number.

The 4 Different Types of Residence Permits in Turkey

Turkey offers different types of residence permits to cater to various needs and circumstances. Here are the most common ones:

1. Short-term Residence Permit: This permit is typically granted for a maximum of two years. It’s a great option for digital nomads, tourists, or anyone who wishes to stay in Turkey for more than 90 days but less than two years.

2. Family Residence Permit: More than likely, this permit won’t apply to you, but it’s worth mentioning. This is for foreign nationals who are married to Turkish citizens or are children of Turkish citizens. The duration of this permit varies but is often up to three years.

I’ve seen some people opt to study Turkish for a couple of hours a day and get student residence permits as a result. 4. Long-term Residence Permit: Just so you know, there are paths to stay in Turkey for a while. This permit is granted to foreign nationals who have resided in Turkey for at least eight continuous years. It’s an indefinite permit that provides almost the same rights as Turkish citizenship.

To obtain a Turkish Residence Permit, certain criteria must be met. Fortunately, the application criteria are actually pretty easy to meet, which is why many have been flocking to Turkey for year-long stays.

Additionally, applicants must prove that they have not received any public aid in Turkey within the three years prior to their application.

I should note that most people don’t apply for Turkish residence by themselves. Typically, they hire a local agency to help them.

Seeking help from an agency to obtain a Turkish Residence Permit, also known as Ikamet, can be an attractive option, especially for those who prefer to delegate the paperwork. I’ve been tempted to do so myself in the past, but the disadvantages always outweighed the benefits. Here are some of the potential pitfalls:

Lack of Transparency and Misinformation

One of the main issues digital nomads might face when dealing with agencies is a lack of transparency. Some agencies may not disclose all the costs involved upfront, leading to surprise fees later. Misinformation is another common issue; not all agencies are up-to-date with the latest laws and regulations, potentially leading to costly mistakes or delays in your application.

High Fees

While agencies can provide convenience, their services often come at a high cost. You may end up paying significantly more than if you applied for the residence permit independently. While it’s true that they handle the process for you, the fees may not be justifiable given the relatively straightforward (or at least, in theory) nature of the Turkish Residence Permit application process. You’re mainly paying for them to grease the wheels and for an added layer of confidence.

However, if you are already in Turkey, you can apply within your visa or visa exemption period. Just ensure that you apply at least one month before your visa or visa exemption expires.

This might look a little different if you allow an agency to handle things, but they still need to check off all these boxes, so you can ask them about these steps in your correspondence with them.

  2. Appointment Booking: After filling out the online form, you will need to schedule an appointment at the local DGMM office in the Turkish city where you intend to reside.

  4. Attend Your Appointment: On the day of your appointment, bring your completed application and all necessary documents to the DGMM office.
  5. Wait for Approval: Once you have submitted your application and all the required documents, you will need to wait for the application to be reviewed. This process can take up to 90 days.
